You Can Find a Job Before the New Year!

It’s the holiday season and while most people are focused on spending time with family, if you’re looking for work, you may be worried about updating your resume and locating open positions. If you have ever struggled to find work, you understand that the search is basically your full-time job. During the holiday season, it is important to stay focused and dedicated to your goal.

Instinct may tell you that the end of the year is typically not the best time to make your next career move, but believe me it can be. After I graduated from college, I started my first job in December. The same thing happened years later when I moved to Colorado and my employer needed someone to cover holiday shifts. So, take it from me, it is possible! With that in mind, I’ve highlighted some helpful tips to keep you motivated and on track for a new role in 2015.

  1. Know what you want: First, figure out what you want to do. This is by far the hardest step in the process and can require some deep soul searching. If you already know, you’re ahead of the game.
  2. Reach out to your connections: This can be through holiday events or via LinkedIn and Facebook. I firmly believe that people have an innate desire to help, especially around the holidays. You can reach out to your connections with a direct message or an electronic greeting card with holiday wishes and a personal update. Make sure to include your contact information in order to keep the conversation going.
  3. Look for companies hiring before 2015: Some companies may realize they have some extra room in their 2014 budgets to fill open positions before the end of the year. This typically happens in larger companies. This means they may act fast and hire someone as January approaches, so be prepared to apply when you see something you want!
  4. Take Seasonal work opportunities: Plenty of companies are looking for seasonal or temporary help. If you get your foot in the door and do a great job, they may find your skills valuable and offer you a full-time position.
  5. Stay determined: As a career coach and author of “New Rèsumè, New Career,” Catherine Jewell states in a Forbes magazine article, there’s less competition in December as others take a break until January. This means that if you stay focused, your resume could be at the top of pile when an employer is ready to hire.

So don’t get discouraged heading into the end of the year, stay motivated and stick to your game plan. That could be what separates you from the pack of other candidates who are on holiday break.
